Mission Statement: The mission of the Waynesville Public Art Commission is to engage the community so as to enrich the public realm through original public art that celebrates Waynesville’s unique historic, cultural, natural and human resources.
Public Art is a perfect fit for Waynesville... A vision shared for over 20 years has now become a well-earned sense of pride. With the goal of creating a successful downtown, the town government, merchants, non-profit organizations, volunteers and the private sector have invested both time and money and have worked together to make Waynesville what it is today. Waynesville is home to many artists and crafters. Their works are well represented in galleries, shops and museums. Waynesville is a model for cultural tourism and what it can do to promote a healthy economy.
*funded by a grant by the North Carolina Arts Council through the “Creating Places Public Art and Design Initiative” Public art promotes Waynesville's ongoing goal for a “walkable community.” Public art also complements the town's continued emphasis on fostering the arts, its streetscapes and revitalization efforts and its historic preservation initiatives. These ongoing efforts and dedication have made Waynesville an ever-evolving and vibrant town that's a great place to live or visit. M I S S I O N Town of Waynesville: to preserve and promote our neighborhoods, open spaces, vistas, natural and cultural resources and historic places. We will achieve this through planning mixed-use developments, aesthetic infrastructure design for economic prosperity, healthy community and family life, education, and the arts for public enjoyment. Waynesville will be regarded as the model town for the Twenty First Century. Our focus is to commission and purchase permanent works of art to build a collection of public art that our citizens consider to be their entitlement and legacy to future generations.
There are many opportunities for public art in Waynesville... Our public art, identified as the “Origins and Destinations Collection” will connect different areas of town. Initially our projects will be centralized within the Downtown, Hazelwood, and Frog Level neighborhoods to encourage pedestrian activity. Their installation will serve as inspiration for future projects linking Downtown to outlying areas.
