On January 4, 2010 the Waynesville Public Art Commission will issue a call to all professional artists, residing in both North Carolina and Tennessee, to create an artistic railing at a Main Street public park to honor the historic connection between the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Town of Waynesville. The project calls for an artistic railing to be created and installed at the "Mini-Park" on the corner of Main and Depot Streets; across from the courthouse. The railing is a component of a larger refurbishment of the entire park. The Commission is looking for a sense of diverse elements coming together to reinforce the connection between the Town's Main Street and the Great Smoky Mountains National park. The project site is near the location of an arched sign erected over Main Street in the 1930s, which declared this intersection to be the direction of travel to the "Eastern Entrance to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park." President Franklin D. Roosevelt traveled through this intersection on his way to the dedication ceremony for the Park in 1934.
