The mission of the Waynesville Public Art Commission is to engage the community and enrich public spaces through original art that celebrates Waynesville’s unique historic, cultural, natural and human resources. Inaugural Public Art Project Celebrating Old Time Music
Application Process – Request for Qualifications The Application Process is managed by the Public Art Commission of Waynesville, NC, a non-profit commission of appointed citizens working under the Waynesville Board of Aldermen. Phase I: The Public Art Commission shall consider the following: The artist’s biography, résumé and technical competency; examples of existing works; and the artist’s use of form, texture, color, line and medium, and clarity of expression. Three finalists will emerge from this process and each of the finalists will be invited to submit sketches and/or models of the proposed artwork. The artists will be required to travel to Waynesville and present their ideas to the Commission. A stipend of $500 will be paid to each finalist for the model/sketches and to present the proposal. Travel and overnight expenses will also be reimbursed (maximum $200) for each of the finalists to travel to Waynesville.
Phase II: The Public Art Commission and a citizens’ advisory committee shall consider the following criteria:
1. The work shall be sensitive to the aesthetic and cultural traditions of Waynesville and the history of Old Time Music in the area. Web sites with pertinent information include: www.smokymountainfolkfestival.com, www.mountaingrownmusic.org, and www.smokeymountains.net. 2. The work shall be appropriate to the site and constructed of durable high quality materials designed to stand up to environmental factors. A site plan and photos of the site are included on this website. 3. The type and cost of future maintenance will factor in to the final choice. Application materials required: Book presentation including 1. Artist’s resume and contact information 2. CD of Digital images or a slide portfolio 3. Inventory image list. 4. Self-addressed envelope Images of works completed within past five years:
Digital Images (preferred): CD of 10 existing works in JPEG or TIFF format and have a resolution within the range of 150 to 300 dpi, and at least 5 x 7 inches in size. Each individual image must be saved under the artist’s last name and the corresponding number as noted on the inventory list. Label the disc with artist’s name and contact information. No email submissions will be accepted. Please test opening your disc – files that cannot be opened cannot be reviewed. Files must be PC compatible and require no image management programs.
Slide Images may be submitted in a plastic slide sheet clearly labeled with artist’s name and contact information. 10 images, 35 mm, 2” x 2” standard slides, each slide individually labeled with artist’s name, title of work and number (corresponding to inventory list) and with indication of top of slide. Inventory image list – an annotated list should accompany the image portfolio clearly identifying each image by number, title, size, medium, date of work and location of installation (if applicable), or price of work if available, for each image.

Deadline: all materials must be postmarked or hand delivered by 5:00 p.m. on January 15, 2008. Please indicate materials are for the Public Art Commission.
