Public Participation Survey for Hazard Mitigation Planning
The Counties of Cherokee, Graham, Haywood, Jackson and Swain and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians are currently engaged in a planning process to become less vulnerable to natural disasters, and your participation is important! The Counties, along with participating local jurisdictions, the Tribe and other participating partners, are now working to prepare a multi-jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan. The purpose of this Plan is to identify and assess our community's natural hazard risks and determine how to best minimize or manage those risks. Upon completion, the Plan will represent a comprehensive multi-jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan for the five-county region and the Tribe. This survey questionnaire provides an opportunity for you to share your opinions and participate in the mitigation planning process. The information you provide will help to better understand your hazard concerns and can lead to mitigation activities that should help lessen the impact of future hazard events. South Main Street Corridor Plan - Progress Continues and Your Input is Still Needed!
The South Main Street Corridor Plan was presented in draft form (available here) to the Waynesville Planning Board by Rodney Porter of the lead consulting firm, La Quatra Bonci Associates. Mr. Porter presented a slide show (available here) highlighting current issue and the design solution of the draft plan. The draft plan contains two alternative concepts that differ in the way several key intersections are designed. Option 1 (available here) basically preserves the same road alignment as currently exists, but adds vehicular lanes, bicycle lanes, sidewalks and landscaped medians. Option 2 (available here) differs from Option 1 in proposing traffic circles (roundabouts) at the intersections of South Main with Dayco Drive and Ninevah Road. Following this presentation, the Planning Board held a public hearing and interested citizens raised questions and made statements for the consultant to consider in preparing the final plan.
At this point in the planning process the consultant will be working with the North Carolina Department of Transportation to refine traffic projections and will prepare a final plan to be presented to the Waynesville Board of Aldermen for a public hearing. Interested persons are encouraged to review the plans and to submit any comments or questions they may have. Contact: Planning Director Paul Benson at 828-456-2004 or
