Adoption of Revised Flood Damage Prevention Ordinance Print E-mail
The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) is a voluntary and mutual agreement between the Federal Government and local governments.  Participation in this program by local governments makes federally-backed flood insurance available to property owners within the local government's jurisdiction.  Basic flood information for property owners, surveyors, developers, and local officials is obtained by using Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs).  At their March 13 meeting, the Waynesville Board of Aldermen adopted a new Flood Damage Prevention Ordinance in order to continue participation in the NFIP.  Copies of the new maps can be viewed here.  For additional information please contact Zoning Land use Administrator Byron Hickox at 452-0401 or by .

Solid Waste Costs and Services Analyzed Print E-mail

Solid Waste is a costly operation for the Town.  In fiscal year 2011 the Town spent 1.45 million dollars on Solid Waste services, which includes the collection of residential and commercial waste, recyclables, yard waste, bulky items and street sweepings.  Last year the Town was notified that the County will close the Transfer Station at Jones Cove Road on July 1, 2012.  This is significant, as the Town currently hauls all commercial and residential waste to the Transfer Station.  Once it is closed, the Town will be responsible for hauling this waste directly to the White Oak Landfill, adding an additional 30 miles to each trip, and requiring a drive to Exit 15 on I-40.

In response, the Town hired Land-of-Sky Council of Government to conduct an objective study of the Town's existing solid waste system and make recommendations on how to adopt to the changes from the County.  Representatives from Land-of-Sky presented the report to the Board of Aldermen on February 28.  This study is available for your review here:
